Description:

Rare color home movie footage from the summer of 1963 of civil rights demonstrations 'CORE' protesting the South Bay’s white-only neighborhood. Protestors, including Marlon Brando, are seen picketing at Southwood Riviera Royale. For 13 months during the height of the Civil Rights movement, these middle-class housing developments became the epicenter of the fight for equal rights in the Southland.

The salesmen employed by Don Wilson Builders were accused of discriminatory practices towards people of color while they shopped for a home at the then-new housing development.

Footage includes shots of protestors on both sides of the issue as well as a heavy police presence. Protestors included not only angry white homeowners but members of the American Nazi Party in uniform and carrying hate signs ( “Brando stooge for Communist Race mixers”).

Civil Rights demonstrators carry various signs - “ Negroes Are Refused Here”, ”Don’t Buy Here”, “Equality Now”, “Boycott Don Wilson” among others
