This 85-minute film examines how the art of the hula has evolved from 500AD, when Polynesians first arrived in the Hawaiian Islands, to the present. Its special focus is the kumu hula (master teachers) who pass along distinctive chants and dances from generation to generation. The film was shot on all of the major Hawaiian islands and presents hālau (hula schools) which represent diverse hula traditions.
