InterviewMehmet Barlas discusses the role of the Turkish Army as a quasi political party

Mehmet Barlas: When asked if Turkey would be an example of a successful Muslim democracy, the answer of yes is backed up by both historical notions of Turkey's democracy as well as their geography (being adjacent with Europe).
Discusses the role of the Turkish army as a quasi-political party that determines on its own accord whether or not it will follow the will of the democratically elected representatives of the electorate. Despite the Turkish army's history of such actions, Turkish Muslims do not grow closer to fringe ideologies. The situation is then compared with Iran and the fact that their history does not contain a democracy similar to that of Turkey.
